‘Food comes first’ – this is what we were saying 34 years ago.

Why is October 16th an important day to acknowledge?

October 16th is an “in between day”, as it anchors Thanksgiving celebrations in Canada (October 14th) and United States (November 28th).

1979 and 1981 marked significant moments in our global history when the United Nations established the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Food Day, October 16 was established. A day when one should observe and perhaps support our global friends and neighbours.

‘If only we had the political will, we could eliminate extreme hunger from the planet. It is the greatest atrocity of our time that we have the solutions to end the suffering of nearly a billion people, but not the will to do what is necessary to enact them. Join the members of the World Food Day network and take action this October 16 and year round to make the basic human right to food a reality for everyone.’
